Warming Hearts, One Coat at a Time

In the spirit of community and warmth, A Chance In Life – The Village is proud to announce its collaboration with New York Cares to distribute 500 coats to those in need this January.
Every week, A Chance In Life – The Village empowers individuals and families in need with a “shopping store” experience at The Village Free Market, its weekly food pantry program. This unique approach allows individuals to choose essential items based on their individual needs.
Our partnership with New York Cares expands this empowering initiative to coat distribution, where individuals will have the chance to select a coat based on size, fit and personal preferences. This thoughtful choice acknowledges and respects the unique needs and autonomy of each person.
“Since the height of the pandemic, we have worked with A Chance in Life to distribute warm winter coats to families and individuals in need within Staten Island,” said Sapreet Saluja, Executive Director Of New York Cares. “We are proud to continue this partnership, as the need is greater than ever.”
This year, A Chance In Life – The Village proudly serves as the primary distribution point on Staten Island for the 35th Annual New York Cares Coat Drive. Since 1989, the New York Cares Coat Drive has made a substantial impact by collecting over two and a half million winter coats for individuals of all ages throughout New York City.
Reflecting on the partnership, Director of Community Engagement of The Village, Chris Dowling, shared, “Being partners with New York Cares for the last 4 years [and] distributing over 5,000 coats in Staten Island to families, children and the those in precarious housing situations has been a highlight of my professional career, but more importantly [it] has been one of the best things I have ever been part of.” Dowling emphasized the warmth not only provided by the coats but also by the shared sense of community.
