Our Focus Areas

Our grants seek to contribute directly to five major problems that negatively affect the lives of children and youth, these five areas are related with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Nutrition (SDG2): Two billion people in the world do not have regular access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food. Hunger and malnutrition mean less productive individuals, who are more prone to disease and it remains a barrier and creates a trap from which children and youth cannot easily escape. Our grants seek to ensure a healthy nutrition for vulnerable children and youth in all countries where we work in partnership with local organizations.

Health (SDG 3): Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being is important to building prosperous societies. Healthy people are the foundation for healthy economies. In 2018, 19.4 million children did not receive the essential vaccines during the first year of life. Our grants ensure the access to healthcare services for at-risk children and youth, reducing child mortality, increasing coverage of immunization, and reducing some infectious diseases.

Education (SDG 4): Education enables upward socioeconomic mobility and is a key to escaping poverty. About 258 million children and youth were still out of school in 2018 — nearly one fifth of the global population in that age group. The disadvantage in access to education translates into lack of skills and limited opportunities in the labor market for young people. Our grants ensure access and retention in education for the most vulnerable children and youth.

Gender Equality (SDG 5): Women and girls represent half of the world’s popu- lation and therefore also half of its potential. But, today gender inequality persists everywhere and stagnates social progress. Inequalities faced by girls can begin right at birth and follow them all their lives. In some countries, girls are deprived of access to health care or proper nutrition, leading to a higher mortality rate. Our grants seek to remove the barriers that prevent girls to reach their full potential.

Climate Action (SDG 13): Climate change is affecting every country in the world. It is disrupting national economies and affecting lives and livelihoods, especially for the most vulnerable. Weather patterns are changing, sea levels are rising, and weather events are becoming more extreme, affecting more than 39 million people in 2018. We all play a role in addressing climate change. Together with our Partners, our grants promote actions to tackle climate change and its impacts.
