A Chance In Life is grateful to receive a transformative grant from the Amazin’ Mets Foundation to support The Village Free Market Food Pantry, a crucial program at The Village, A Chance In Life’s first drop-in youth center in the United States. This significant grant will empower us to continue providing essential food and resources to families and individuals in need on the North Shore of Staten Island.
1 in 3 children in the North Shore community live in poverty, exceeding New York City and Staten Island averages, according to the Citizen’s Committee for Children of New York. To address this need, The Village Free Market offers a unique “supermarket experience” where individuals choose from a diverse selection of healthy options with dignity and respect.
Cynthia Valle, the Director of External Relations of The Village, emphasized the importance of the foundation’s support: “The Village Free Market Food Pantry has significantly amplified our impact, allowing us to better serve our beneficiaries, thanks to the profound generosity of the Amazin’ Mets Foundation.” She continued, “Our commitment to combating food insecurity goes beyond providing healthy meals; we offer essential resources and create a safe, inclusive environment where individuals feel a true sense of belonging. Throughout the year, we host events that allow our beneficiaries to celebrate holidays and connect with the community. Additionally, we offer vital resources in education, financial literacy, healthcare, and more. We foster a thriving, resilient community by partnering with like-minded organizations.”
The pantry is more than a place to receive food; it is a haven where individuals in need find a welcoming and open community. Since its inception, The Village Free Market has served more than 55,000 individuals and built lasting connections between the A Chance In Life team, volunteers, and the community. This year we anticipate serving 12,800 individuals.
