Celebrating Volunteer Month: Honoring the hands that serve our community

At A Chance In Life, our mission to empower and uplift vulnerable youth and families would not be possible without the dedication and compassion of our volunteers. This Volunteer Month, we take a moment to recognize the invaluable role they play in our daily work — and to say a heartfelt thank you.

Established in 1974, National Volunteer Month is celebrated every April in the United States to honor the millions of people who generously give their time to make a difference in their communities. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly one in four Americans volunteers in some capacity each year, contributing billions of hours of service that strengthen the fabric of our society.

At The Village, A Chance In Life’s program on Staten Island, we see this spirit of service in action every day. Every Tuesday, rain or shine, volunteers show up to serve hundreds of community members through The Village Free Market food pantry. Their dedication ensures that families facing food insecurity have access to fresh, nutritious food in a welcoming and dignified environment. Beyond the weekly pantry, volunteers also support with different activities and special events throughout the year — helping us offer celebrations, educational workshops, and community-building activities that foster connection, resilience, and hope.

In honor of Volunteer Month, A Chance In Life organized a special Volunteer Appreciation Event on Tuesday, April 22. After another busy morning serving the community at the pantry, volunteers and staff gathered for a fun and relaxing afternoon of bowling. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the incredible contributions of our volunteers, and enjoy each other’s company. More than just a chance to unwind, this outing fostered team spirit, deepened connections, and strengthened our shared commitment to building brighter futures together.

We are especially grateful for our partnerships with organizations that help expand our volunteer efforts, including The Grace Foundation, whose volunteers faithfully support us every Tuesday, and AmeriCorps Seniors Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) from Community Service Society (CSS), which connects us with experienced volunteers for long-term support.

At A Chance In Life, volunteers are more than helpers — they are the heart of our mission. They show us that when we come together in service, we can transform lives, strengthen communities, and inspire hope.

To all our volunteers: Thank you for being the hands that serve, the hearts that care, and the heroes that make a difference.

Would you like to volunteer with us?
