May 15 marks the United Nations International Day of Families—a reminder that strong families are the foundation of strong communities. When families are supported, children are better able to grow, learn, and thrive.
At A Chance In Life, we believe that supporting young people means supporting the families who raise and care for them. That’s why, five years ago, we opened The Village, our youth center on the North Shore of Staten Island. It is not only a space for learning and connection, but also home to our community food pantry, The Village Free Market.
On Staten Island’s North Shore, 20% of households rely on SNAP and over 20% of children live in poverty. The area is also considered a food desert, meaning that many residents struggle to access affordable, healthy food—especially fresh fruits and vegetables. When hunger is a daily concern, it’s difficult for children to concentrate in school.
But A Chance In Life is committed to addressing the needs of our community and alleviating food insecurity. By relieving that burden, we help ensure young people can focus on their education and their future.
At The Village Free Market, we provide fresh fruits and vegetables, proteins, and pantry staples to about 150 families every week, thanks to your support. We use a client-choice model, which means families choose the foods that work best for them – whether due to dietary needs, cultural preferences, or religious practices. It’s a small but powerful way to restore dignity, respect, and comfort to those facing food insecurity.
By feeding families, we free children to focus on learning. We create stability, one meal at a time. And it’s all because of you. Thank you for helping us nourish hope and build a stronger future.
