Meron

Twenty-one-year-old Meron defied the odds in rural Ethiopia, where educational opportunities were scarce. Her family, including her parents, three sisters, and two brothers often struggled with the financial strain of basic services. Undeterred, Meron harbored a dream of higher education, traveling over 16 miles to school each day.

Responding to her family’s request, The Hostel for Disadvantaged High School Girls offered an opportunity Meron did not take for granted. It provided her with essential provisions – food, shelter, and a nurturing community. Aiming to resolve the financial and logistical burdens that hinder young girls, The Hostel hopes to foster a community focused on studies and contributions to the community.

The program welcomed Meron and placed her at St. Anthony Secondary School to begin her transformative journey. In this supportive environment, Meron thrived. She served as girls’ representative for two years and facilitated various clubs and activities within the Hostel.

Meron, in line with her development, attained the top score among the girls at The Hostel on the University Entrance Examination. Her performance on the exam, a new sense of responsibility, and learned leadership skills earned her a place to study medicine at one of the best universities in Ethiopia. Meron dreams of becoming a doctor. Thanks to her family and the hostel community for recognizing and allowing her to dream big, it is possible.

Grateful for the support she received while in The Hostel, Meron expressed her thanks to everyone who made her journey possible. She promised to return during vacations, inspiring girls still on their educational and personal journeys. At A Chance In Life, we are proud to be a part of Dr. Meron’s story!
