Letter from A Chance In Life President/CEO Gabriele Delmonaco:

It is with a heavy heart that I share the somber news of the passing of one of our beloved members of our Board of Directors, Mr. Herman Hochberg at the age of 93. Herman’s unwavering dedication to our organization and his tireless efforts in support of our mission have left an indelible mark on A Chance In Life and the lives of thousands of young people.

Many years ago, A Chance In Life’s founder, Msgr. John Patrick Carroll-Abbing, invited him and his late wife Polly to Rome to visit the Boys’ and Girls’ Towns of Italy. During that unforgettable trip, they were granted the extraordinary privilege of meeting Pope John Paul II. Herman’s gratitude overflowed as he asked, “Monsignor, you have been so kind to us. What can I do for you?” And so, Herman became one of the most ardent supporters of A Chance In Life, dedicating over four decades to organizing the Wine and Spirits International Dinner, raising millions of dollars for the children we serve worldwide.

Herman’s passion for our mission and commitment to the legacy of our founder were palpable. He inspired us all to keep our founder’s message close to our hearts: “The secret of happiness is to love. The essence of love is to serve.” Herman embodied this philosophy, making service to our children the very purpose of his life. I remember seeing him shed tears during our board meetings as he spoke about the transformative power of A Chance In Life’s work.

Herman’s wisdom, warmth, and unwavering support uplifted our entire organization. His speeches at our galas were poetry in motion, odes to kindness and celebrations of life itself.

During this difficult time, our hearts and prayers are with Herman’s family and loved ones, particularly his daughter Marisa. We extend our deepest condolences and share in their grief. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The world is a brighter place because of Herman.

Sincerely,

Gabriele Delmonaco
