María

At Hogar de la Niña Juan Pablo I in Colombia, the Gender Equity workshops offer an inspiring platform for young girls to explore their vocational aspirations and discover diverse career opportunities. During a recent session, the classroom walls reverberated with the excitement of future singers, veterinarians, police officers, doctors, models and teachers.

We had the privilege of learning more about 8-year-old María, who dreams of becoming a teacher when she grows up. María shared her motivation: “I would like to teach other girls all the good things I have learned from my teachers. I want to pass on the positive experiences, opportunities, and advice I received from my teacher, and I would like to contribute to the growth of girls just like me.” When asked about her own teacher and the positive qualities of instructors, she explained, “My teacher is great, she always shows positivity, and she is constantly teaching us about values like honesty, respect, and commitment…In my view, a remarkable teacher invests effort, passion, and genuine care for her students and makes sure that none of them is left behind.”

Facing challenges at home in Buenaventura, Colombia, María enrolled at Hogar de la Niña Juan Pablo I three years ago. “María stands out as an affectionate, tender [and] intelligent student,” her teacher beamed. “She actively fosters harmonious relationships with her classmates, excels academically, and embraces constructive feedback. Her sense of responsibility is evident,” her teacher continued.

María’s story embodies the essence of our mission – to inspire a cycle of empowerment, where knowledge and guidance are shared, fostering a brighter future for all.
